Aug 25, 2004 · A 392 is a 345 with larger pistons, but they are otherwise the same size. None of the blocks are interchangeable, as the cylinder walls are not large enough to bore a 345 to a 392, for example. You build the engine according to which block you have. The 304 weighs about 720 lbs fully dressed. The 345 weighs about 760, and the 392 about 780.

May 14, 2006 · The 392 is a good engine and would run 200K in dump trucks with nothing but routine maintanence. Not much for diesels today but its pretty good for a 60's gasser truck engine. However, all the IH small v-8s (SV) have cam bearing problems in their old age.

The International Harvester Company (IHC) has been building its own proprietary truck engines since the introduction of their first truck in 1907. International tended to use proprietary diesel engines. In the 1970s, IHC built the DVT 573 V-8 diesel of 240 and 260 hp (179 and 194 kW) but these were not highly regarded and relatively few were sold.

Jun 6, 2005 · I prefer the IC 392 over any of the other SV's, with the exception of the 266. I tow, and I like the power output of the engine. I agree with Clockwork, a 4bbl 345 and a 392 run about the same unloaded, but with a load on the back the 392 is vastly superior.

Apr 21, 2008 · A quick way to tell the difference between the shorter 266/304 blocks vs. the 345/392 is to check the distance between the two rear-most intake manifold bolts. They are about 9" apart on the larger engines, 8" on the smaller.
