On January 8, 1944, it was agreed to celebrate for June 24 of each year, the Day of Cusco and the reinsertion for the universal culture of one of the greatest festivities of the Inca empire, the Inti Raymi. It was staged for the first time after hundreds of years in Sacsayhuaman in 1944.

The Inti Raymi festival, whose name means “Festival of the Sun” in Quechua, is one of Cusco‘s most important events. It is celebrated every June 24th, during the winter solstice, and in 2001 it was declared Cultural Patrimony of the Nation.
