Hypersensitivity reactions to intravenous iron: guidance for risk ...
Acute hypersensitivity reactions during iron infusions are very rare but can be life-threatening. This paper reviews their frequency, pathogenesis and risk factors, and provides recommendations about their management and prevention.
Iron Infusion Reactions: Risk Factors and Real-World Experience
Nov 5, 2021 · The major adverse effect associated with IV iron is infusion-related reactions (IRR), ranging from mild reactions mediated by complement activation-related pseudo-allergy to anaphylaxis. In this study, we sought to determine rates and severity of iron IRR, identify patient characteristics associated with IRR and report strategies for subsequent ...
Iron Infusion: Benefits, Side Effects & What To Expect - Cleveland Clinic
Aug 30, 2023 · One way of treating anemia is with intravenous iron, or an iron infusion, which is delivered into a vein through a needle to increase the levels of iron and hemoglobin in your body. If you don’t have enough iron in your body, an iron infusion can add iron through your vein. What is an iron infusion?
Analysis of Adverse Events and Intravenous Iron Infusion …
Mar 30, 2022 · Our study found significant differences in the rate of infusion reactions among IV iron formulations, with the highest rates of reaction occurring among those who received IS (4.3%) and lowest among those who received ferric carboxymaltose (1.4%).
Prevention and management of acute reactions to intravenous iron …
Self-limited hypotension during intravenous iron infusion could be considered to be due to hypersensitivity or vascular reaction to labile iron. Acute hypersensitivity reactions to current intravenous iron formulation are believed to be caused …
Hypersensitivity to intravenous iron: classification, terminology ...
Intravenous (IV) iron therapy is widely used in iron deficiency anaemias when oral iron is not tolerated or ineffective. Administration of IV‐iron is considered a safe procedure, but severe hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) can occur at a very low frequency.
Iron Infusions, Their Reactions and Efficacy Related to Dosing - a ...
Nov 15, 2022 · Intravenous (IV) iron infusions are associated with a variety of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) including anaphylactic reactions. The Commonly used IV iron formulations are Iron sucrose (Venofer), Ferric carboxymaltose (Injectafer), Sodium ferric gluconate complex (Ferrlecit), and others.
Safety of Intravenous Iron Following Infusion Reactions
Aug 16, 2020 · We explored the feasibility and safety of administering intravenous iron following an adverse reaction to an initial iron infusion. We reviewed iron infusions at our institution resulting in adverse reactions and examined patients who underwent recommencement and completion of the index infusion.
Acute hypersensitivity reactions during iron infusions are very rare but can be life-threaten-ing. This paper reviews their frequency, pathogenesis and risk factors, and provides recommendations about their management and prevention.
CONCLUSIONS: Following an infusion reaction to intravenous iron infusion, recommencement of the index infusion is safe for Fishbane or mild and moderate hypersensitivity reactions. Subsequent rechallenge to an alternative formulation is tolerated, including in severe hypersensitivity reactions (albeit based on limited numbers).
