Nov 29, 2022 · The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) became the dominant group in the region in the late 2010s after splitting from Jama’at Ahl al Sunna lil Da’wa wal Jihad, commonly known as Boko Haram, in 2016.

This report explores how and why ISWAP emerged from Boko Haram, how it has gained ground both territorially and politi cally against Shekau’s JAS faction, and how it uses guerrilla tactics to challenge regional armies, particularly Nigeria’s.

ISWAP and ISGS split from Boko Haram and AQIM, respectively. Both groups currently continue to operate in two different geographical spaces. Boko Haram has been operating in the northeastern part of Nigeria since the early 2000s.

The paper looks at linkages of JNIM, IS West Africa Province (ISWAP), and IS in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) with terrorist groups in North, West -Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa. In West Africa, ISWAP’s activities have been regionally confined to Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.

ISWAP, which split from Boko Haram in 2016, maintains camps on islands in Lake Chad – where Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad meet – and the area is known to be the group’s bastion.
