Jan 16, 2011 · The Kepi or forage cap was used like they said before... to forage for food while out in the woods. It has been said that when under the blistering heat and humidity the soldier would put a wet cloth or leaves in the top of the hat to keep the soldier cool.

I might make a couple smaller changes so I can do higher kepi's, or different band designs. If I manage to get my pattern down, I will make sure to share it if anybody is even interested.

What other makers of quality kepis are there.

In 1863 when the Corps badges were mandated their was usually a company tailor, informally designated who would sew chevrons and cloth insignia on caps and sleeves.

Jun 5, 2022 · The Type 1 represents the early jackets put out by Richmond Depot, mid to late 1862. The trim on the colar and epaulets would disappear by 63. Your cap is a forage cap, not a kepi. I would loose all the brass, that wasn't very common on CS caps. I would invest in either a kepi or civilian slouch hat at some point, much more common.

Jun 5, 2023 · One is a Confederate kepi. Red wool, with oddly enough, a lining from a haberdasher in CT. It is quite nice in quality, but not something one would want to wear, given it's age. He said 1861 vintage. The other is a leather top hat/cap. It is about 12" tall, brown leather, it has a bill and a copper hat band.
