This particular work is a portrait of Kewene Te Haho of Ngaati Naho, Ngaati Haua and Ngaati Whawhakia from Te Makaka, Aotea Harbour. Born around 1813, Te Haho fought in the 1830 Taumatawiwi battle between Te Waharoa of Tainui and Ngāti Maru of Hauraki and accompanied Te Waharoa in 1835 on a fighting excursion to Rotorua and Maketu.
