It is the capital of Preah Sihanouk province in southwestern Cambodia. Formerly known as Kampong Saom (Khmer: “Port of the Moon” or “Port of Shiva”), the city was renamed for King Norodom Sihanouk in 1958.

The province's alternative name Kompong Saom (Kampong Som) was adopted from the local indigenous community. After the dissolution of French Indochina in 1954, it became apparent that the steadily tightening control of the Mekong Delta by Vietnam required a solution to gain unrestricted access to the seas.

The Bay of Kampong Som is a southern bay of Cambodia. Kampong Som has a deep water inshore and a chain of islands across the mouth which protect the bay from storms. Deforestation of Indochina mangroves has become issues. [1]
