The LNER had designed a new type of superheated boiler (Diagram 16) based on the old design (Diagram 15). These were used on the B1 and B4 class locomotives; no more of this type of boiler was made after 1932, and so to keep the B1 and B4s in service during World War II, some Diagram 15 boilers were modified for use with these locomotives.

The Robinson Class B4 (GCR Class 8F) 4-6-0s. Robinson developed the Great Central Railway (GCR)'s Class 8F (LNER B4) from his two experimental B1 4-6-0s. At construction, the only difference was that the B4s had driving wheels that were three inches smaller at 6ft 6in diameter.

These two diagram books contain copies of over 180 engine diagrams for locomotives designed, modified or owned by the LNER from 1923, including the final designs which came out after nationalization. The Gresley diagrams for NER locomotives are headed ‘SECTION D’; the D stands for Darlington.

Feb 23, 2022 · One of the most rare is loco diagrams. Some can be found on society websites and some other grpups that deal with a specific area. Something that would be useful would be some sort of database/repository similar to what Robert has done.

This section of the LNER Encyclopedia describes all of the locomotive classes to serve with the LNER. The LNER would often denote major modifications with a slash. E.g. B16/2 is a modified B16. Occasionally such modifications would be so substantial that a completely new class number would be given (eg. an A3 is a modified A1).
