Dec 9, 2018 · 828 – Undergoing overhaul at the Mid Hants Railway, owned by the Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society. The Society purchased 828 in 1981 and moved the engine to where it was built, Eastleigh Works, where after almost 12 years of restoration the locomotive moved under its own steam in 1992.

The locomotive chosen was an S15 class goods engine which finished its service as number 30828. The purchase price to buy the locomotive from Woodham Brothers was £10,500 which was raised with the help of a grant and loan from Eastleigh Borough Council.

The S15 was the third of Robert Urie's 4-6-0 designs for the LSWR. (the other two being the H15 and the N15). Twenty were built at Nine Elms in 1920. Their appearance is very similar the N15 class and they shared many components including the 180 lb per sq in boiler and tender designs.

The class S15 were a class of two cylinder 4-6-0 steam locomotives that were designed from Robert Urie for freight service. The class was withdrawn between 1962 to 1966. No. 30837 was the final S15 to go, returning to Feltham in January 1966 to work a farewell rail tour.

Robert Urie used this opportunity to develop his recent H15 class design further, applying the 4-6-0 locomotive concept to a purpose-built freight design built to order number S15. It was this order number that gave the class the name “S15” H15 class introduced in 1914 by Urie.
