The M33 was based on the chassis of the M3 medium tank. It first served in Italy and later in a small extent in northern Europe. And was replaced by the M6 tractor. It was used to tow the 8in M1 Gun and 240mm M1 Howitzer.

The M33 Prime Mover was first used in Italy to tow the M1 240mm Howitzer with some also seeing service in NW Europe before being replaced by the M6 High Speed Tractor. They were converted from M31 Recovery Tank which in turn had been based on the M3 Lee.

The first effort to produce a prime moved based on the M3 produced the T16, which was built around M3A5, but this lacked storage space and the project was abandoned.
