The M35 Prime Mover was an artillery tractor improvized by the Ordnance in 1944, derived from the M10 wolverine tank hunter as a stopgap measure.

With the planned invasion of Europe beginning on D-Day, the need for adequate transport for the heavy artillery pieces became apparent. Initially, M31s and M32s were converted to prime movers by removing their turrets and installing winches, these being renamed M33 and M34 respectively.

The M35 a converted M10A1 with turret removed and towing gear plus new brakes added, it was used as a stop gap until the M6 High Speed Tractor could be produced. Mainly used to tow 8in M1 Gun and 240mm M1 Howitzer.

Apr 11, 2023 · Similar to the full-track prime movers M33 and M34, the M35 was an interim conversion to produce prime movers for the 240mm howitzer and 8" gun until the 38-ton high-speed tractor M6 could enter service.

M35 Prime Mover Project. Starting in January 1944 the Lima Depot converted 209 M10A1 Wolverine tank destroyers into M35 prime movers. Work included removing the turret, ammo racks, and equipment not needed for use as a prime mover.

During January to June 1944, 209 M10A1s Tank Destroyers were also converted by removing their turrets and part of the interior construction and renamed M35 Prime Mover. The M35s can directly control the brakes and detachment of the cannons from the main vehicle and remained active in battle throughout the later stages of the war in Europe.

While the M35 was designed to act as the prime mover for the M55 Quadmount system, which included a towed trailer, the M45 mount was often removed or the wheels removed from the trailer, and the system mounted on the bed of the truck.
