The M32 tank recovery vehicle was an armored recovery vehicle (ARV) used during World War II and the Korean War by the United States, and was based on the chassis of the M4 Sherman medium tank. During World War II, the British also used several hundred M32s, which were obtained through Lend-Lease in 1944.

The M4 Sherman series were widely distributed to allied armies under the Lend-Lease program. Variants served in all theaters, and were the basis of a number of conversions for various uses, including armored personnel carriers and specialized engineering vehicles.

The M32 could be based on any version of the Sherman, with the M32 being based on the M4, the M32B1 on the M4A1 and M32B2 based on the M4A2 and M32B3 based on the M4A3. There was a pilot based on the M4A4 but no production vehicles were made.

The M32 ARV was the second (Armoured) Recovery Vehicle fielded by the US Army during WW2, better refined with early experience in this very new field of research. It was to succeed the M31 ARV based on the now obsolete M3 Lee Medium Tank, and produced on the M4, M4A1 (cast hull) and also M4A2, A3 shermans.

One WWII M4 Sherman -based ARV had a dummy gun installed where the turret would normally go. Early ARVs in WWII were often repurposed tanks, with the turret and armament removed and replaced with some type of winch. In the 2010s, ARVs are generally factory-built.

Of the Shermans, 188 were converted from M4A4s, and 33 from M4A2s. The “Sherman ARV Mark I” was a rather simple affair that did not include a winch like the US retrievers, but was designed instead to recover and haul disabled tanks by the use of towing cables or draw bars.
