Beginning in 1959, most American M48A1s and M48A2s were upgraded to the M48A3 model. The M48 Patton-series saw widespread service with the United States and NATO until it was superseded by the M60 tank. It was widely exported.

May 25, 2020 · A distinguishing external feature of the M48A2 tank was a raised rear engine deck combined with a vertical rear hull plate featuring two large louvered doors that replaced the complicated grill work seen on the rear engine decks of the M48 and M48A1 tanks.

M48A2 was powered by a more efficient fuel-injected version of Continental's V-12, and when coupled with the extra room for fuel tanks provided by the more compact design of this engine, the range of the M48A2 was greatly increased.

These tanks were used in 1955 for the component development of the M48A2 production tanks including fire control systems, turret cupolas, suspension configurations, and power packs.

Aug 10, 2021 · The M48A1 designation was used to signify a revised driver's hatch and the M1 commander's cupola with provision to operate a Browning M2 air-cooled 12.7mm heavy machine gun from within the tank turret itself. The M48A2 featured improved turret function but still retained the gasoline powerplant.

M48A2 – Fuel injection fitted to engine and 5 return rollers. M48A2C – M48A2 with an improved rangefinder, M17, new ballistic drive and bore evacuator for the main gun, and the auxiliary tensioning wheels were deleted.

The M48, M48C and M48A1 can be fitted with the M8 blade weighing 3,980 kg and the M48A2, M48A3 and M48A5 with the M8A1 blade which weighs 3,810 kg. The tank can ford to a depth of 1.219 m without preparation and to 4.438 m with a deep fording kit.
