The M520 "Truck, Cargo, 8-ton, 4x4", nicknamed Goer, truck series was formerly the US Army’s standard heavy tactical truck before its replacement by the Oshkosh HEMTT. As trucks go, the Caterpillar-made Goer stands out due to being articulated, much wider than other trucks, and lacking suspension on the wheels.

Oct 22, 2020 · The GOER was first developed in the early 1960s and saw some field tests in Germany and Vietnam. Four versions of this vehicle emerged: The baseline M520, an eight-ton truck; the M533, a wrecker (really, a big tow truck); the M559, a fuel tanker; and the M877, an eight-ton truck with a crane.

The M520 Goer had a unique design that included a front-mounted engine and a hydraulically-powered steering system that allowed it to navigate rough terrain and tight spaces. It was powered by a 375 horsepower diesel engine and had a top speed of 35 miles per hour.

In the 1950s the development of highly off-road capable tactical trucks for the US Army was launched. The two outstanding results of this undertaking were from 1966 the M520 Goer and from 1969 the M561 Gama Goat articulated trucks.
