May 1, 2001 · When WWII began with the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, a number of German soldiers were armed with the MP38. The MP38 preceded the more prolific MP40 model. It is the weapon from which the more famous MP40 evolved.

The MP38 and MP40 were submachine guns used by Germany during World War II. They were designed by Heinrich Vollmer and produced by Erma Werke. MP38: Developed in 1938, the MP38 was an improvement on earlier submachine gun designs. It featured a folding metal stock, a 32-round magazine, and fired the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge.
