Aotearoa (Māori: [aɔ.ˈtɛa.ɾɔa]) [1] is the Māori name for New Zealand. The name was originally used by Māori in reference only to the North Island , with the whole country being referred to as Aotearoa me Te Waipounamu – where Te Ika-a-Māui means North Island, and Te Waipounamu means South Island . [ 2 ]

This map of Aotearoa shows major towns and cities in te reo. It also shows oceans, rivers, lakes and water passages. Many of the place names will be familiar such as Whangarei and Hokitika but others will be less familiar like Ahuriri and Otepoti.
