The Martin PBM Mariner is a twin-engine American patrol bomber flying boat of World War II and the early Cold War era. It was designed to complement the Consolidated PBY Catalina and PB2Y Coronado in service.

Jan 16, 2019 · Martin Mariners were nicknamed “flying gas tanks” because they tended to leak fumes. Martin had a history of producing flying boats, and in 1937 the company began work on a design to replace the Consolidated Catalina in US Navy service.

Apr 15, 2022 · Even before the first flight of the XPBM-1, on 81 December 1937 the Navy ordered 20 production PBM-1s from Martin. In keeping with their custom of giving Martin aircraft monikers beginning with M, Martin dubbed their PBM the Mariner.

The Mariner carried the equipment needed for routine maintenance. It was a powerful and reliable aircraft, but the PBY Catalina became much more famous because it served in larger numbers during the first years of the war.

The Martin PBM Mariner—the world's largest twin-engine flying boat—was noted for its range, bomb load, ruggedness, and seaworthiness. This graceful aircraft succeeded the PBY Catalina as the U.S. Navy's principal flying-boat patrol bomber and was flown by most of the Navy's patrol squadrons at the end of World War II.

Fresh from success with earlier twin-engine flying boats for the navy and the larger Clippers, the Martin team proposed their gull-winged model 162 (PBM) flying boat to the navy and included, for the first time, a three-eights scale man-carry-ing airplane to prove its air and water worthiness.

One of the truly great flying boats of all time, the Martin PBM Mariner was produced in seaplane and amphibian versions. It was the most important naval aircraft in its class during World War II.
