The N-37 was used in the MiG-9, MiG-15, MiG-17, and early MiG-19 fighters, the Yakovlev Yak-25, and others. Production lasted through the late 1950s, although it remained in service for many years afterwards.

The MiG-15 carried two 23mm and one 37mm cannon and was designed to destroy enemy bombers. The two cannons, The F-86 carried six M-3 .50-caliber machine-guns like the one displayed at the museum.

Ammunition was rather limited, with only eighty rounds being provided for each 23-mm cannon and forty rounds for the 37-mm cannon. This provided only 8.7 seconds of firing before all ammunition was expended.

The Soviets chose the 37mm because they intended both the MiG-9 and MiG-15 to intercept bombers, the 37mm would provide the hard hitting firepower needed for strafe runs whilst being considerably lighter than using a multitude of smaller 20/23mm guns.

Aug 2, 2006 · The MiG-15 was armed with 2 x 23mm NR-23 guns and 1 x 37mm N-37 guns. The 23mm guns had 650 rounds/min rate of fire, and the N-37 had 400 rounds/min rate of fire. However the Russians were quite stingy with ammo and only equipped 80 rounds per gun on the 23mm, and 40 rounds on the 37mm.

The Nudelman N-37 is a single-barrel 37-mm cannon fitted to the MiG-17 Fresco fighter aircraft. It also armed MiG-9, MiG-15 , early MiG-19 and Yak-25 jets. The weapon replaced the similar NS-37 (for Nudelman-Suranov).
