May 28, 2020 · Cap'n Jazz is usually cited as the original midwest emo band. Other notables include Sunny Day Real Estate, Christie Front Drive, Boys Life, and Mineral." Midwest Emo is basically indie rock influenced emo. A lot of bands that had a midwest emo sound come from the midwest, so the name stuck. Like Cap'n Jazz and American Football came from Illinois.

This led to about a decade of "midwest emo" being "emo with twinkly and tappy guitar". These 4th wave "midwest emo" bands would include some earlier acts like Algernon Caldwaller, Street Smart Cyclist, Snowing, Glocca Mora, Marietta, Joie De Vivre and even more later on.

As far as my current preferences, I do like things from posthardcore all the way to pop/punk with a few standouts like Owl City and recently some folk (Arcadian Wild).

Since you’re looking for small Midwest bands that are STILL active, I went through the band lineup from Fauxchella and Pug Fest this year, looked up which states they were from, that they semi-fit the Midwest Emo bill, and tried to leave out bands already mentioned.
