Anthropologists commonly divide the Miwok into four geographically and culturally diverse ethnic subgroups. The Plains and Sierra Miwok lived in the western slope and foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the Sacramento Valley, the San Joaquin Valley, and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
