The note head is the round part of the note and is the most fundamental component, indicating the note’s pitch when placed on the staff. Note heads can be open (hollow) or closed (filled), which helps to determine the note’s duration.

There are 6 main types of music notes. We’ll use the American names for the notes, with the British name in brackets. This note lasts for 4 beats. A lot of music has 4 beats per bar, so this note would last for one whole bar. The oval shape is called the ‘head’. This note is half the value – it lasts for 2 beats.

In Properties panel, open Note: Head tab, select a Notehead type, or Click on an item in the Noteheads palettes , or drag it onto a notehead in the score. These note(s) will be always use this item, regardless of any future pitch change by user unlike other notes on this staff.
