NOAA operates a wide variety of uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) to collect environmental data. NOAA uses the term "uncrewed aircraft system" to describe flying drones, which are also often described as "autonomous," "unmanned," or "remotely piloted" vehicles.
About NOAA Uncrewed Systems Operations
NOAA divides its UxS by the main environments they operate in – the air (Uncrewed Aircraft Systems, or UAS), and the water (Uncrewed Marine Systems, or UMS). Within these categories, there are many types of UxS that vary based on the task they are meant to complete.
This handbook provides supplemental guidance for all NOAA UAS operations. NOAA UAS operations are described in detail in this section, and include operation of UAS by the UxS Operations Center, Line Offices, and NOAA contractors. Whereas the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Policy 220-1-5 describes the requirements for obtaining flight approval
