SMPTE color bars are a television test pattern used where the NTSC video standard is utilized, including countries in North America. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) refers to the pattern as Engineering Guideline (EG) 1-1990. [1] .

Use the test pattern to check the image quality. The circles should be complete and round, the lines in the frequency patterns should be clear and defined, and the color gradients should not have any breaks or banding.

This is a test area to check if your monitor or screen supports a wide range of colors and other color-related tests. The test is organized into three sections: COLOR TEST is for color gamut, HDR and new image formats compatibility.

Now, the color encoder uses each of the difference signals (R-Y, B-Y) to modulate the 3.58 MHz reference carrier. The difference signals modulate the amplitude and phase of the 3.58 MHz subcarrier. The amplitude modulation represents the intensity, or saturation, of a color and the phase modulation represents the hue, or specific color intended.

The following test patterns are used for color checker tests. Each patch in each test pattern has a specific value for the Hue, Saturation, and Value (luminance) for each color. These values can be identified on each patch by the identifying numbers.
