Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), with an operational name of NavIC (acronym for Navigation with Indian Constellation; also, nāvik 'sailor' or 'navigator' in Indian languages), [2] is an autonomous regional satellite navigation system that provides accurate real-time positioning and timing services. [3]

To meet the positioning, navigation and timing requirements of the nation, ISRO has established a regional navigation satellite system called Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC). NavIC was erstwhile known as Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).

In April 2016, with the last launch of the constellation's satellite, IRNSS was renamed Navigation Indian Constellation (NAVIC) by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. [1] IRNSS is an independent and autonomous regional navigation system aiming a service area of about 1500 kilometers around India.

GPS is not a generic term for satellite navigation. The correct term is GNSS, which comprises of all the above systems. Common location tracking devices are capable of receiving signals from many or all of the above systems, including NavIC.
