By action of the State Legislature, the bluebird, beaver, brook trout, sugar maple, rose, nine spotted lady beetle, bay scallop, eurypterid, and garnet officially represent the state's birds, mammals, fish, insects, mollusks, trees, wildflowers, fossils, and minerals.

Three emblems that represent New York State are the Device of Arms (commonly referred to as the coat of arms), the Great Seal and the State Flag. All three emblems incorporate the image of the Coat of Arms. The arms of New York State were officially adopted in 1778.

Since 1955, New York has adopted 16 official state symbols; 11 are depicted here. The other five are: apple (fruit); milk (beverage); lilac bush (bush); apple muffin (muffin); and yogurt (snack). State Motto: New York’s state motto is “Excelsior” which means “ever upward.”

Although the bay scallop is an official state symbol of New York, its range is actually from Nova Scotia, Canada, to the Laguna Madre on the western Texas Gulf Coast.
