Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can also be utilized to better elucidate various biomarkers following RAO. During the acute phase of RAO, OCT findings may include intraretinal edema, inner retinal layer hyperreflectivity, inner and outer retinal thickening, and disorganization of the retinal layers structure [Figure 4A].

It is an obstruction of retinal blood flow that may be due to an embolus causing occlusion or thrombus formation, vasculitis causing retinal vasculature inflammation, traumatic vessel wall damage, or spasm.

In this series, we review the literature on OCT findings in RAOs, particularly noting the role of OCT in delineating anatomic findings, chronicity and natural course, and functional outcomes. A case series of five patients with RAOs is provided to illustrate these findings.
