The okapi (/ oʊ ˈ k ɑː p iː /; Okapia johnstoni), also known as the forest giraffe, Congolese giraffe and zebra giraffe, is an artiodactyl mammal that is endemic to the northeast Democratic Republic of the Congo in central Africa.

Okapi, also known as the Forest Giraffe or Zebra Giraffe, are African herbivores with close resemblance to both the zebra and the giraffe. They were not distinguished by the western science as a distinct species until the early 20 th century.

It’s a cloven-hooved mammal native to portions of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa. Although it resembles a zebra with its striped markings and appearance, genetically the okapi is related closer to the giraffe. Known to be mostly diurnal, okapi may be active in the first few hours of darkness at night.
