Pecan (Carya illinoensis) is one of the better-known pecan hickories. It is also called sweet pecan and in its range where Spanish is spoken, nogal morado or nuez encarcelada. The early settlers who came to America found pecans growing over wide areas.

Map of Pecan Growing Areas. The native range of pecan occupies a wide geographical area extending from 42 degrees N latitude at the northern end of its range southward to 16 degrees N latitude. This extensive host range exposes the pecan to a wide variety of climatic conditions throughout the temperate growing regions of the planet.

Collections in the National Clonal Germplasm Repository for Pecans and Hickories include pecan cultivars selected from within the native range and also from beyond, as well as seedlings grown from seed collected from native trees throughout the range (map of NCGR collections).

A tall straight tree with a symmetrical, broadly oval growth habit. Leaves are yellow-green in summer, eventually turning yellow-brown in fall. Non-showy female flowers are followed by sweet, edible nuts.

Pecan is a narrowly distributed (3.9% of area), sparse, but high IV species common in several southern species, concentrated in Texas and Oklahoma but extending into Illinois. Its model, of low reliability, shows a huge expansion of habitat, especially under RCP 8.5.
