May 21, 2021 · Pikillaqta is the word for flea town in Quechua. However, scholars are unsure of the origin of the name. Pikillacta was a major urban center of the Wari culture, which flourished in the Andes between about 600 and 1100 AD, predating the Inca civilization.

It was the Spaniards that gave it the name of Pikillacta or Pikillaqta, a Quechua word that could be interpreted as “Flea City” or “Small Town.” The archeological complex is one of the largest prehispanic places within the Cusco region since it has an extension of 50 ha.

The settlement of Pikillaqta is located in the hills of the eastern valley of Cuzco on the Lucre basin, some thirty kilometres away from the Andean capital and at an altitude of approximately 3250 metres above sea level.
