A diesel multiple unit or DMU is a multiple-unit train powered by on-board diesel engines. A DMU requires no separate locomotive, as the engines are incorporated into one or more of the carriages. Diesel-powered single-unit railcars are also generally classed as DMUs.

The DMU is powered by two Detroit Diesel engines with a combined 1,200 horsepower (890 kilowatts). Each DMU is capable of traveling up to 100 mph (160 km/h). The DMU is 85 ft (26 m) long with a height of 14 ft 10 in (4.52 m) (19 ft 6 in (5.94 m) for the bi-level DMU).

Most MUs are powered either by traction motors, receiving their power through a third rail or overhead wire (EMU), or by a diesel engine (DMU) driving a generator producing electricity to drive traction motors.

These diesel railcars were developed by Nippon Sharyō directly for the North American market, with final assembly partly taking place in the USA. Three different variants of cars were offered, all with a 760 hp Cummins engine with hydraulic transmission and a cab.

Standard formations included single cars, power car and trailer, twin power cars, two power cars plus one (or two) intermediate trailers. A number of higher power units were also developed with 180 bhp and 230 bhp engines.
