Ratan Naval Tata[a] (28 December 1937 – 9 October 2024) was an Indian industrialist and philanthropist.

Sir Ratan Tata was a connoisseur of art. In his extensive travels, he had acquired an exquisite collection of European paintings, Art Deco objects, manuscripts, textiles, arms, armaments, and porcelain artefacts.

Over the course of his extensive travels, Sir Ratan Tata — often guided by expert opinion— collected large numbers of porcelain and decorative objects from Southeast Asia, European paintings, Art Deco artefacts, manuscripts, textiles, arms, and armours.

Ratan Naran Tata, a name synonymous with philanthropy and innovation, inherited a deep appreciation for art and aesthetics from his legendary grandparents, Sir Ratanji Tata and Navajbai Tata.

Aug 29, 2018 · Very few people know about Sir Ratan Tata (1871-1918), the second son of India’s pioneering industrialist Jamsetji Tata. His contribution to the freedom struggle and building an encyclopedic art collection for the country is unmatched.

Ratan's interests in travel and the visual arts took him to East Asia, where he acquired Chinese and Japanese porcelains and other decorative objects as complements to his large collections of European paintings, jade and Indian paintings, manuscripts, textiles and arms.

The art section displays the collections of Sir Purushottam Mavji, acquired in 1915, and the art collections of Sir Ratan Tata and Sir Dorab Tata, donated in 1921 and 1933 respectively.
