Reweti Arapare (born 1984) is a New Zealand illustrator, sculptor and painter. [1] Arapare was born in Tauranga in 1984. [2] Of Māori descent, Arapare affiliates to Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, Ngāti Porou, and Ngāti Tūwharetoa. [2]

Aug 9, 2015 · Blending customary whakairo (carving) and contemporary art, Reweti Arapere built a giant pou representing a tiki out of cardboard. Inspired by Māoritanga (Māori culture) and street art, Rangimatua (Sky Father), was adorned with felt pens that depicted the creation myth of the sons of Ranginui and Papatuanuku.

Reweti works with photography and moving image. [1] Her work explores and subverts New Zealand iconic landscapes, and issues of contemporary indigenous realities. [1][6] Reweti is a member of the Mata Aho Collective, a collaboration of four Māori women artists known for their large scale textile-based installations. [7]

An artist and illustrator, with a Masters of Māori Visual Arts from Toioho ki Apiti School of Maori Art, Massey University. Reweti has exhibited extensively both throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.

May 3, 2021 · Reweti Arapere learnt that the art he wanted to make was the art that emerged when he looked at the world through his Māori eyes. His giant cardboard and felt-pen figures help him to tell the stories of his whakapapa and of Aotearoa.

This conglomeration of historical and contemporary symbols by Reweti Arapere seem as if they are in conversation with each other, and anyone who takes the time to interact with them. Each work is titled in te reo, revealing a clue to their full story.
