Roque Bentayga is a rock formation on the island of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). It is located within the volcanic caldera of Tejeda, in the municipality of the same name, in the heart of the island.

El roque Bentayga es una formación geológica monolítica de Gran Canaria (Canarias, España). Se halla dentro de la caldera volcánica de Tejeda, en el municipio del mismo nombre, en el centro aproximado de la isla.

An indigenous stronghold, El Roque Bentayga is considered by experts to be one of the most important sacred places from Gran Canaria’s aboriginal legacy and a place of vital importance for these ancient pre-Hispanic societies.

Roque Bentayga (also Bentayga or even Ventayga) is the perfect example: a standalone rock in the focal point of a huge erosion crater, attracting attention from any direction. It also is a historical (as well as archaeological) landmark with its more than 100 pre-hispanic caves in the south face and an old guanche shrine near its top.

From the depths, in the heart of the current erosive crater of Tejeda, the Roque Bentayga emerges. It represents a sacred place for the island’s original inhabitants, as the arqueological settlements that lie there testify.
