With terrible reviews, abysmal crash test ratings, bad fuel economy ratings, poor acceleration and suspension, and an engine that would nuke itself without constant maintenance, the Yugo failed to last.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the "Yugo" was a low-cost vehicle being sold in some US states. It was a Yugoslavian/Serbian vehicle that had a brief run with lots of crazy marketing. Ultimately, reviews were bad due to the perceived low quality/reliability of the vehicle.

May 15, 2012 · I'm gonna go look at a 86 Yugo GV in the near future, where do these cars like to rust? Anything else to look for other than normal used car type stuff (check fluids, clutch, steering play, shocks, etc.)?

Apr 13, 2007 · Roughly half of them would be considered "unserviceable" by US Army standards. Three had a damaged muzzle or crown, seven had rusted/pitted/dark bore (one of these had a spiders nest in the bore). Only two had a serviceable cleaning rod.

Oct 2, 2018 · Completely rusted out within 3 years. Buy oil by the gallons at gas station. Used oil a dollar a gallon. Gas attendant saved it for us.

May 27, 2010 · Next I plan to knock out the pin on the FSB that holds the pin that holds the muzzle nut, and crank, because if you have to depress the pin you need an extra hand. Could the nut be rusted on; has anyone else experienced this with a Yugo or other AK varient and if so, what did you do about it?

I just picked up a 1986 Yugo GV, 1.1L 4-speed, in that "great" 80's offwhite color. Apparently it was used in the movie "Drowning Mona", and the body is remarkably rust-free given that I'm in Ohio. 68k miles, and it lived up to its reputation -- 30 miles down the highway on the way home and the head gasket blew.

Depending on where they were going to be driven, that was basically inevitable, so a car designed around being totally rusted out might actually be at an advantage.
