The carbody of the SD40-2 is only a couple of feet onger than the carbody of the GP40-2. The length is not where you expect it. It is not between the engine air intake and the radiators, it is between the cab and the engine air intake. Don't let the extra dynamic brake fan throw you off, count the doors.
How much did an SD40-2 cost in 1972??? - Trainorders.com
Don't know about the cost of an SD40-2 but I recall talking to a GE Rep. in Marion Ohio in March of 1975, he said the 3 new UP U30-C's that were ready to depart west that same day cost $350,000 each. The road numbers were 2905, 2907, and 2909. EMD's offering may have had similar pricing during that
LokSound V4 issue-Scaletrains SD40-2 - Trainorders.com
Hi everyone, I've got a Scaletrains NS Rivet Counter SD40-2 that features the factory equipped Loksound V4 sound decoder. I'm having problems with it running intermittently and the lights flashing (like loss of power). I've contacted Scaletrains, and they're willing to help, but
Model Railroading > Operating Ditch lights - Trainorders.com
I have added many sets of working ditch lights to locomotives, including the SD40-2, and it is not that difficult. I'm making the assumption that you are using DCC in the instructions below for the resistors. First, select the appropriate ditch light housing for your model.
Scale Trains SD40-2 Quick Review - Trainorders.com
ScaleTrains new SD40-2 models somehow found a way to my house yesterday and I thought I'd share my initial thoughts on these awesome models. I picked up a Burlington Northern model to turn it into a lease locomotive and now I am having second thoughts about that project, simply because this model looks so damn good.

Eastern Railroad Discussion > SD40-3's vs SD40-2's
Generally, the difference is that the SD40-2 has a modular electrical system, while the SD40-3 has a microprocessor control system. The SD40-3's are rebuilds of other units, so the exact differences may very from railroad to railroad, though. The W&LE SD40-3's are rebuilt SD40's that have Q-Tron microprocessor control systems. Athearn SD40-2, extended range dynamic grid - Trainorders.com
I have a few "older blue box kits" SD40-2's that have extended range dynamic brake grids. These are on the "post 80's" units. How accurate are these? I am modeling a Seaboard System SD40-2 with extended range dynamics using a Kato snoot 40-2, with a smaller nose and Q fans. I ha
ESU LokSound Decoders for HO KATO Mid SD40-2
Purchase the new Digitrax DH165K1A and their Sound Bug. The DH165K1A was designed in partnership with Kato for SD40-2 HO Locomotives. The Sound Bug plugs into this decoder (and other 165 series decoders) and comes with the speaker. This offers you many ranges of bell, horn, etc that can be changed in the CV programming.
