This group of petroglyphs in the Alta Fjord, near the Arctic Circle, bears the traces of a settlement dating from c. 4200 to 500 B.C. The thousands of paintings and engravings add to our understanding of the environment and human activities on the fringes of the Far North in prehistoric times.

Hjemmeluftbukta (Norwegian) or Jiepmaluokta (Northern Sami) is a bay in Alta Municipality, Finnmark, Norway. It is the main site for the rock carvings at Alta with about 3,000 individual carvings (petroglyphs). The bay lies on the southwestern edge of the town of Alta.

The petroglyph's composition describes a phase of the cosmology where the spirits of deceased warrior-priests of the Sun undergo a journey in the underworld where they have been transformed into female spirits within the flow of moisture in the underworld.

In 1973, near the tract Chalmny-Expedition Varre NN Gurin and V.Ya. Shumkina detected six stones on a flat surface which cut different images - the petroglyphs. They are carved on the surface of six boulders, the largest of which has an area of almost 7 m2.

The next stop is a visit to the Boazo Sami siida. Located on the banks of the Alta River, the siida is a seasonal community inhabited by the Sami -- Scandinavia's indigenous, semi-nomadic people. You'll be greeted by these friendly people in colorful traditional dress.
