There are two surviving AT&SF 2-8-2 "Mikado" type locomotives. These two locomotives (numbers 3167 and 4076) were lost in a flood in 1952 and are now sunk in the Kaw River in Topeka, KS.

Baldwin and the Santa Fe calculated evaporative heating surface area using the firebox, tube heating surface area, and the feed water heater's 417 tubes of 2 1/4" diameter and 6 ft 8 (2.03 m) in length, which contributed 1,617 sq ft (150.22 sq m).

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" Locomotives in the USA The Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad bought a pair of "Decapod" type locomotives for use as pushers on the Raton Pass over the mountains to and from California.

Feb 8, 2010 · Worley comments that this idea seems to have represented a continuing interest in Mallets that now was based on their successful 2-10-4 "Madame Queen" (Locobase 457). The enormous grate was 22 feet (6.71 m) long, just six inches shorter than the boiler tubes; its coal consumption was calculated at 142 lb/sq ft (693.3 kg/sq m) .

Known to the Santa Fe as a "Consolidation Mallet," these two engines were rebuilt from 2-8-0s at Topeka in 1911. Like other Santa Fe mallets, this class has an additional 2,383 sq ft (221.83 sq m) ahead of the tube sheets as reheater space.

The development of the 2-10-4 and articulated locomotives resolved the counterbalance problems and these locomotives replaced the 2-10-2s in mainline use. The "Santa Fe" type locomotives were relegated to dragging coal and ore trains or used in isolated pusher roles.

The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad bought fifteen "Berkshires" type locomotives from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1927. These locomotives were designated as Class 4101 and assigned road numbers 4101 through 4115. The AT&SF was the only western railroad to have purchased new 2-8-4s.

Locobase 194 tells much of the story of this Mountain design, the only class of 4-8-2s to operate on the Santa Fe.

Like most of the Santa Fe's 2-8-0s, these sturdy freight haulers served well into the late 1940s.
