The female cones are upright seed cones that are solitary, oblong to ovate, and measure 2 to 4 inches long and 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide. They are initially green and turn reddish-brown as they mature. The cones ripen 18 to 20 months after pollination.

In its native habitat in Japan, this evergreen conifer may grow to 90’ tall. In cultivation in the U.S., however, it typically matures to 25-30’ tall over many years. It is a very slow grower, usually attaining a height of no more than 4-5’ in the first 10 years.

Sciadopitys verticillata is one of the most fascinating of all conifers. A so-called living fossil, it sits alone, one species in one genus in its own family, with no close living relatives, but with a fossil record that can track its ancestors back some 230 million years (Farjon 2008).

Sciadopitys verticillata (Umbrella Pine) is a very slow-growing evergreen conifer of spire-like to broadly pyramidal habit. Branching is dense and heavy with a lush foliage of thick, heavy, fleshy, rich glossy green leaves, 2-5 in. long (5-12 cm).

Wintergreen Umbrella Pine has attractive dark green evergreen foliage on a tree with a pyramidal habit of growth. The large glossy needles are highly ornamental and remain dark green throughout the winter. The brown fruits are held in cones in mid fall.

Has anyone ever had a garden specimen cone? The only people that I know that have seen cones are those who have observed the trees growing in the wild in Japan. The trees near here at Quarryhill (species) are 20-25 years old and have never coned.
