The Senoi (also spelled Sengoi and Sng'oi) are a group of Malaysian peoples classified among the Orang Asli, the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia. They are the most numerous of the Orang Asli and widely distributed across the peninsula.

Here you will learn about the indigenous peoples of West Malaysia called the SENOI, and in particular, the two largest ethnic groups, the Semais and the Temiars. Their homeland stretches over the central mountain range of the Peninsula with its numerous river valleys.

The Senoi are the indigenous people of the land, inhabiting its plains and mountains long before it was known as the Malay Peninsula, or even Malaya (the name is believed to originate from the ancient Sanskrit name Malayadvipa, found in the Vayu Purana, meaning “mountain island” 1).

Senoi, Veddoid people found in the Malay Peninsula and in small groups along the coastal plains of eastern Sumatra, Indonesia. In the early 1980s they were estimated to number about 18,000. Traces of such a people also appear in the eastern islands of Indonesia.

The Temiar are a Senoic group indigenous to the Malay Peninsula and one of the largest of the eighteen Orang Asli groups of Malaysia. They reside mainly in Perak, Pahang and Kelantan.

‘Orang Asli’ are divided into three main tribal groups: Negrito (Semang), Senoi and Proto-Malay. The Negrito usually live in the north, the Senoi in the middle and the Proto-Malay in the south. Each group or sub-group has its own language and culture. Separating the Orang-Asli into three official “groups” is a bit misleading.

The Senoi were one small part of this mystique that included a glorification of Native Americans and their beliefs, especially their beliefs about dreams, visions, and healing, as popularized most successfully in Carlos Casteñada's alleged (but totally fabricated) conversations with a Yaqui Indian sorcerer, Don Juan.
