Based in Wales, UK, we are a specialist Shruti Box developer and supplier. Our fine quality instruments are hand crafted from solid tonewoods for a resonant and harmonious sound. Simple to use and easy to play, they provide a rich sustained drone accompaniment for singing, sounding and music-making.

The origins of the shruti box can be traced back to the Chinese sheng, an ancient wind instrument still in use today, which makes sound when air passes through small bamboo reeds. These free-reeds were later to influence a new family of Western instruments, including the harmonica, accordion and harmonium.

We produce three different Shruti Box models, available in keys: C, A# and Low G. The mid-sized M1, has become a much-loved favourite since its launch in 2007 and is popular with singers, sounders and meditators. Alternatively, for a different look and sound, the M2 offers a nice option.

What is a Shruti Box? The Shruti Box is a bellows-operated portable reed organ. It is played by hand or by foot using the Bowring pedal, and is part of the ‘free-reed’ family of wind instruments, including the harmonium and accordion.

Our premier Shruti Box, the M3 was developed to work seamlessly with the Bowring foot pedal, with the gigging musician in mind. The result, a larger instrument than our standard M1, with enhanced air capacity and wooden swivel feet which provide extra stability and sound insulation between instrument and floor.

For customers purchasing a pedal to go with either our M1 or M2, or a different make of Shruti Box, we also include one pair of wooden stabiliser feet for DIY retro-fitting. Bowring Foot Pedals are available in a choice of three different cable Lengths.

Shruti Box Company is a family-run business dedicated to developing and supplying the finest quality Shruti Boxes. It was founded in 2004 by Stefan Cartwright, who in his spare time enjoys singing and playing music with friends accompanied by his Shruti box.
