In 196 Yuan Shu defeated Liu Bei in Xu Province with the aid of Lü Bu, who then changed sides and forced Yuan Shu's forces back to Shouchun. In 197 Yuan Shu declared himself emperor of the Zhong dynasty, which made everybody hate him.

In the earlier stages of the battle, Sun Huan led a separate force to attack the Shu vanguard force at Yidao but ended up being besieged by the enemy. He requested for reinforcements from Lu Xun but was denied.

Despite being clearly outnumbered, the Shu Han forces repulse Cao Wei at the Battle of Xingshi. The Wei forces flee the battlefield. Further ineffective campaigns are subsequently launched by the Shu Han against the Cao Wei.

Shu was usually in alliance with Eastern Wu against Cao Wei, with its generals, Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei launching several northern expeditions against Wei's forces. Shu would fail in its many invasions, and a massive Wei army subjugated Shu in 263 after years of warfare that drained Shu of manpower and resources.

Shu Han, founded and led by Liu Bei and later succeeded by Liu Shan, is the closest equivalent to "the good guys". Their motive is focused solely on forging a kingdom for the people, one of true peace and, of course, benevolence and virtue.
