New Materials for Silk Covering - RC Groups
Apr 16, 2016 · I applied the silk the same way I would silk a sheeted wing or fuselage. Lay the silk over the area to be covered, wet the silk with an atomizer and stretch the silk into position. Coat the whole area with thinned dope and let it dry. After all the water has evaporated re-coat the silk with thinned dope until the weave is filled.

Feb 28, 2025 · If you buy silk, buy only white. The dye in colored silk reacts with the dope and prevents it from shrinking. It shrinks fine with water, but the first coat of dope causes it to go slack. Not matter how many additional coats you apply, it will not shrink. I have had good luck with Koverall and colored dress lining material.

Dec 16, 2024 · Definitely some fine workmanship previously on this model! I see that some of the parts had silk applied. Can't find the 2nd Hellfire bracket so I'll try to unbond the built one so I can template what I need. That's if I can't make it just eyeballing it....

Dec 24, 2024 · I have many RO models, most still flying on original 27 MHz escapement and pulse RC systems. Jul 31, 2024 · It’s not silkspan. I’ve covered with silkspan (paper like imo) and silk back in the day and the weave of the silk was much finer than what I see there. For a minute I thought maybe the wings were fully sheeted and had been covered with fiberglass. But on second look I see ribs. I’ve never used koverall so idk what the weave is like.

Oct 15, 2020 · A bit of background: Old RCer here having built my first plane in the early 60's. When iron on coverings came around in the late 60's / early 70's I quickly adopted Monokote and used that and many other film and fabric iron coverings to this day. Also used more traditional coverings such as silk or silkspan and dope among others.
