A lute (/ lj uː t / [1] or / l uː t /) is any plucked string instrument with a neck and a deep round back enclosing a hollow cavity, usually with a sound hole or opening in the body. It may be either fretted or unfretted.

Nov 10, 2024 · The lute is a string instrument with a distinctive pear-shaped body and a fretted neck, usually featuring a backward-angled pegbox. Lutes typically have a hollow body, or resonating chamber, that helps amplify the sound, and strings that are plucked or strummed.

In many old paintings and statues in churches we can find depictions of the medieval lute. This lute is quite small and usually has 4 double courses. Sometimes this early medieval lute is confused with the gittern (see mandolins), which has a similar shape.
