The first thing anyone would notice about the SCD-XA5400ES is the heavy duty construction of the unit. I have a 5 disc SACD changer from Sony, but the construction of that is nothing compared to the ES model.

Jun 29, 2023 · The 5400 is a superb player by all reports. But good luck buying a new laser to keep it running when the laser dies. And unfortunately, it came to market a few years before adding digital inputs became a common feature on high-end SACD players. So, when its laser dies, it will be truly dead.

Apr 23, 2010 · In a direct A/B comparison of the stock 5400 (after about 200 hours of break in) with the Sony SCD-1/Chord DAC combo, with carefully matched levels, when playing SACD, the two players were essentially identical with maybe a bit more air round the 5400.
