Below is a list of all 171 GWR Castle Class engines, built between August 1923 and August 1950. Five of these were converted to burn oil for a short period in the 1940s. Unlike most other locomotives so converted, they were not renumbered. [1] Rebuilt from Star Class 4009. Renumbered and renamed January 1936.

According to "Three Barrels of Steam", 5037 had left Gila Bend, AZ with a 3175 freight and an almost full tender, as well as a 16000 gallon aux tank. They passed another 4-10-2, number 5008, at the siding at Bosque.

(*The most ironic image of the 5037 - shown on page 45 in Joe McMillan's 1985 H/C book, "Santa Fe Motive Power" - was taken by Martin Bosnyak, at Cajon, less than 30 minutes away from the conflagration that killed two Santa Fe employees and destroyed three other units.)

The Louisville & Nashville Railroad took delivery of 16 USRA design 4-8-2s in 1926. These locomotives had 27 x 30 cylinders, 70" drivers, a boiler pressure of 200 psi, exerted 53,900 lbs of tractive effort and each weighed 334,240 pounds.

Jun 30, 2016 · On June 25th D5037 & D5040 were stabled at Ipswich station. The last day of the summer timetable in East Anglia also marked the end of steam hauled express passenger workings in the area. It was however not a day to remember favourably.
