Dec 16, 2006 · Its bad mojo, they dont want the ammo to reload, they want the brass to SCRAP, at 2 to 3 bucks a pound, they are making a killing on selling it, and they dont want to pick the aluminum stuff out, same as steel core, it makes the recycling easier.

Jul 13, 2006 · Steel-core .308 is AP ammo, painted with a black tip, and cannot be surplussed or imported, so it's quite rare. -Troy But 30-06 black-tip is available... and is easily loaded in .308 cases.

Oct 7, 2006 · The importation of steel-core was stopped by the ATF after somebody decided to start making "pistols" out of semi-auto AK type rifles. "Armor piercing" handgun ammo is forbidden of course. The ban also affected E. German ammo which was steel core and being imported at the time and selling for $99 a case.

Apr 25, 2012 · Despite whatever the gooberment may decide, steel core does not make ammunition armor piercing. The combloc countries commonly used mild steel cores to cut costs. Real armor piercing ammo has a hard steel core and will be penetrate farther on hard targets. Soft steel core ammo penetrates about as far lead core ammo on hard targets.

I have seen a lot of inexpensive 'steel core' .308 bullets lately that are the LPS projectile from the 7.62x54R ammunition which have been resized from their original .311" diameter down to .308". Not at all armor piercing and probably none too accurate.

Nov 26, 2022 · Bought some Barnaul 300 Blackout ammo the other day and went to the range to test it out. Well, the range officer did a magnet check on the bullet and I was told it was steel core. Therefore, I was not able to use it. However, I checked the Barnaul website for that ammo specifications and nowhere it says it is steel core.

Jul 11, 2014 · So I suggest that steel cased/steel core ammo is prohibited because they can't "harvest" it. It gets mixed-in with lead ammo/brass cases, and it's too much trouble for them to separate the "good from the bad." Think of all the brass these guys at Dragon Man's must sweep up during the day.
