If you drive a Crosstrek, Forester, Outback, Legacy or Ascent, your vehicle is designed to run on 87 octane, or regular fuel. Lean means that the mixture of air and fuel that enters the combustion chamber in your motor; rich is just the opposite having more fuel in the ratio. Having a Rich A/F ratio will cause your car to bog or even have fuel comming out of your exhaust.
