Taenarum or Tainaron (Ταίναρον) or Taenarus or Tainaros (Ταίναρος) was a town of ancient Laconia, situated at the distance of 40 stadia, or 5 miles (8.0 km), north of the isthmus of the Taenarian Peninsula (modern day Cape Matapan).

Mar 28, 2024 · In Greek mythology, Cape Tainaron, also called Cape Matapan (from the Doric Greek “Metepea Akra,” meaning “promontory between two seas”), occupies an important place as the fabled entrance to the Underworld, presided over by Hades, god of the dead.

It contained quarries of red (rosso antico) and black (‘Taenarian’) marble; iron was mined near the cape. (2) A city on the west coast of the above peninsula, later a member of the Eleutherolaconian League (see laconia), alternatively known as Caenepolis. Roman and Byzantine remains survive.

Taenarum, or Taenarus, was situated five English miles north of Cape Taenarum, now Cape Matapan. It contained a temple of Demeter, also one of Aphrodite. It is today the village of Kyparrisos.
