Thomas Arthur Reiter (born 23 May 1958 in Frankfurt, West Germany) is a retired European astronaut and is a Brigadier General [1] in the German Air Force currently working as ESA Interagency Coordinator and Advisor to the Director General at the European Space Agency (ESA). He was one of the top 25 astronauts in terms of total time in space.

Thomas Reiter war von 1992 bis 2007 ESA-Astronaut und der achte Deutsche im All. In der russischen Raumstation Mir absolvierte er 1995/96 den ersten ESA-Langzeitflug überhaupt. Dabei unternahm er als erster Deutscher einen Weltraumausstieg.

After his active astronaut career, Thomas Reiter was named on 8 August 2007 as a member of the Executive Board of the German Aerospace Center, DLR, responsible for Space Research and Technology.

Thomas Reiter studierte an der Universität der Bundeswehr in München Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik. Er ist Diplomingenieur und General a.D. Als Pilot der Luftwaffe war er auf den Mustern Alpha-Jet und Tornado eingesetzt. Im Zeitraum von 1990 – 1992 absolvierte er die Ausbildung zum Testpiloten.

Thomas Reiter is a retired Brigadier General with the German Air Force. As a GAF pilot, Reiter flew more than 15 types of military combat jet aircraft, including the Tornado, and logged over 2000 hours of flight time.

Seit dem 1. April 2011 ist Thomas Reiter Leiter der neuen ESA Direktion für Bemannte Raumfahrt und Betrieb mit Sitz in Darmstadt.
