Number 439 was built in February 1952 as RF&P E8 1007 (c/n 15712) on EMD Order 2050, became Amtrak 216 (1st), then 439. The bridge in the background is the ICG's Saint Charles Air Line.

The sole surviving ex Caledonian Railway 439 Class 0-4-4T No. 419 (55189), is being repainted from its BR Lined Black livery into LMS Crimson lake Maroon livery with its LMS Number No. 15189, for the first time in preservation.

The GWR 439 Class, nicknamed the Bicycle Class because of its unusual appearance, was a series of six 2-4-0 mixed-traffic engines designed by Joseph Armstrong for the Great Western Railway, and built at Swindon Works in 1868. The "Bicycles" worked at Northern Division sheds, running between Wolverhampton and Chester.

Caledonian '439' class 0-4-4T - 419 | From 1898, J.F.McIntos
From 1898, J.F.McIntosh designed a series of standard tank engines for the Caledonian Railway's short distance mineral and passenger trains. The initial design was for 0-6-0T locomotives, then in 1899 came an 0-4-4T design specifically for the Cathcart Circle and the Balerno branch.
